Hematoxylin and Eosin staining of the wild type (Id4+/+, A-F), heterozygous (Id4+/-, G-I) and homozygous (Id4-/-, J-Q) mouse prostates (5 um sections from proximal to distal region). The yellow (Panel Q) and black arrowheads (Panels E, M, O, P, Q) represent hyperchromatic nuclei and layers of stratified epithelium respectively. The asterisk indicates the stromal layer surrounding the tubules (Panels O, P and Q). Panel O is an enlarged image of the corresponding box in panel N. Frequency of PIN like lesions (pseudo-stratification) in Id4+/+, Id4+/- and Id4-/- was quantified (average n = 100 cross sections, and >200 tubules) in each genotype and statistical analysis (1-way ANOVA and Dunnett’s multiple comparison test) is shown in panel R. Representative images are shown. AP: Anterior prostate, VP: ventral prostate, DLP: Dorso-Lateral Prostate. The sections are counterstained with hematoxylin hence the nuclei are blue.
