A possible pathway for the functional role of Abi1 phosphorylation in colorectal carcinoma invasion. Y435-Phosphorylation of Abi1 through Abl or another kinase that is targeted by STI571 enhances activity of class I and/or class II NPFs, thus facilitating actin branching and invadopodia formation. Secretion of lytic proteinases at the site of invadopodia formation leads to ECM degradation and cleavage of Laminin5, which supports local tumour cell invasion.
