The Survivin/VEGF connection in angiogenesis. Tumor cells overexpressing Survivin induce VEGF synthesis/release in a β-catenin signaling-dependent manner. Liberated VEGF may act on endothelial cells promoting angiogenesis together with endothelial cell secreted VEGF. Alternatively, in tumors with few endothelial cells, survivin-induced VEGF synthesis/release may promote vasculogenic-mimicry. For details, see main text
